safe around him, enjoy riding him and taking care of him? Come spend a week with us and
learn!
- Are you a rider or merely a passenger?
- Are you a horse owner or a horse slave?
- Are you a wise horse purchaser or a horse trader's dream?
- Are you buying your veterinarian's Rolls Royce?
ATTEND OUR HORSE CAMP AND BECOME AN INFORMED HORSE OWNER ... YOUR HORSE WILL
THANK YOU!
"The goal of a good horseman is to become so sensitive to the entire horse,
to the movement of its body and how the horse thinks, that the rider can sense
trouble, anticipate exactly how the horse will react, and move to control that
reaction even before the horse is aware of its own feelings."
- Dorothy Moore Jasper, Boy Scouts of America Merit Badge Book
Many people approach purchasing a horse in the same way they approach buying a
puppy, discounting that a horse - besides being a much larger animal - has a
mind of its own and, most-likely, its own unique agenda. Throughout this one
week program, we will present a great many highlights of horse ownership - and
some of the pitfalls.
During Horse Camp at Grapevine, we will educate you on the following: What to
look for in purchasing a horse - ideal conformation and temperament, Horse
etiquette and handling - proper approach, handling, and grooming,
Basic horsemanship - how to control the horse, how to communicate,
Horse health management - necessary inoculations, worming program, when not to
panic and when to call the vet,
Equine nutrition and shelter,
Farrier science - examples of a well-shod hoof and a shoeing demonstration,
Theory of saddles and the correct way to pad and saddle, and
Theory of bits and bridling.
We finish the week with an introduction to reining (western dressage) where
you'll witness a well-trained horse and his rider performing a graceful ballet,
each complementing the other, in a disciplined, mutually-enjoyable performance.

(Available May, July , November, January)

Several times a year we need to gather our cattle and bring them to the
corrals for seasonal work. Come ride with us and learn about ranching and the
cowboy way of life.
In May and July we gather the herd so that the new
calves can be branded, vaccinated and then turned out to graze the summer
pastures with their mothers.
In October, the cattle are gathered again
and the calves separated from their mothers for shipping. The cows are then
pregnancy tested, vaccinated, wormed, generally checked over for good health and
turned out to graze. The replacement heifers (young cows) are selected,
vaccinated, year branded and ear tagged, and turned out to graze.
In
January, the herd is brought in and the pregnant first calf heifers are
separated to be put into a nearby pasture, where they can be watched daily in
case of calving problems.
You must have riding experience for this, as
you will be considered a part of the working crew, and we will teach you just
what it is that makes a good cowboy.
Price is $/€50 per day (plus tax) in
addition to the accommodation rate. |
